Training Information

It’s the final countdown to Joburg’s safest race – the 2009 Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

What are your goals?
What is your plan?
Are you in-training?

Whether you’re a first timer aiming to finish or a seasoned racer looking to achieve a personal best/podium, it’s time to set yourself up for success.

The way forward is simple, and we’re here to help you.

TRAINING PROGRAMS
Our official race coach, Dr Carol Austin, has prepared three 10-week training programs for our entrants.

For the First Timer (Sub 4:30) you are:

• New to the sport of cycling
• More interested in the journey and enjoyment than the race
• Have not been training regularly (if at all)
• Would like to enjoy the experience and minimize the “suffering”
• Keen to on improve your fitness and health
• Riding a mountain-bike, hybrid or entry level road bike
• Ready to commit to 4 training sessions per week, with longer rides on the weekend
• Planning to do a couple of 50-85km races leading up to the 94.7

For the Personal-Best Performer (Sub 3:30) you are:

• A past participant of the 94.7 or similar distance mass road race events in the past
• Curious about your real performance potential and would like to see what you could achieve with a scientific training approach
• Training regularly at the moment and can currently comfortably manage a 2:30hr ride
• A member of a cycling club and participate in weekend group rides
• Have a normal body weight for your build, age and height
• Riding a entry to mid-level road bike
• Ready to commit to 4-5 training sessions per week, with longer rides on the weekend
• Planning to race several 85-100km races leading up to the 94.7

If you’re Going for Gold! (Sub 2:30 or Category Podium) you are:

• A competitive amateur cyclist who has managed a sub 3-hour 100km road race in the past
• Racing with a licensed category or Group A in the 2009 Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge
• Currently training 8-12 hours per week, and have been doing so consistently for at least the past 3-months
• Lean and mean, with a competitive body weight for your build, age and height
• Racing an elite level sub-8kg road bike
• Ready to commit to up to 6 training sessions per week
• Planning to race regularly in the weeks leading up to the 94.7

About Our Coach
Dr Carol Austin is a medical doctor with a passion for endurance sports. She is a certified coach with a proven record across a broad range of endurance sports from beginner through Olympic level. Her athletes have earned national and continental titles, and regularly represent South Africa in international competitions in cycling (road, MTB, track) and triathlon. Carol is the founder/director of ACTIVEWORX a South African company, which offers world-class endurance sports performance services and products. ACTIVEWORX is the official training partner to Team MTN/Energade, Africa’s Leading Continental Cycling Team, and consults to Triathlon South Africa.

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit
The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit will be open for all Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge Entrants 5pm till sunset. Wednesdays are free, otherwise there is a R 10 charge Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
