The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge rocks Joburg again

The time to get back on the bicycle has come again with the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge hitting the streets of Johannesburg for the 14th time, on Sunday 21 November 2010.

“Over the past 13 years, the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge has become a highlight on the calendar at 94.7 Highveld Stereo, and for the whole City of Jo’burg,” said 94.7 Highveld Stereo Station Manger Ravi Naidoo.

As one of South Africa’s largest sporting events, the cycle challenge provides not only an enjoyable event for the whole family but an elite bicycle race across the most bustling city in Africa.

More than 25,000 cyclists entered last year and an equally large, if not bigger, peloton is expected for this year’s race.

The new improved route for the race will highlight regenerated areas of the Jo'burg CBD. It will offer a challenging ride for serious cyclists and a visually entertaining and exciting route for the rest of the pack. Taking over the landmark iconic Nelson Mandela Bridge and the city’s highways with only pedal power will be a buzz for cyclists.

Commenting on Momentum’s title sponsorship and involvement with the Cycle Challenge, Dana Cooper, Momentum Group Brand Executive said: “We are hugely proud to be able to bring an event to life that energises and showcases the best of the City of Jo’burg and its people. It’s a great way to connect the people of Jo’burg, not just the cyclists, but the people who line the streets. This year Jo’burg residents have shown what great hosts we can be to international visitors and we are anticipating the same generosity of welcome to make the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge a flagship event for Jo’burg.”

The City of Jo’burg, along with the Taxi Association, has guaranteed a circuit with the freedom of road closures along the route, with minimal disruption to residents of the city.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works have again pulled together to ensure that safety is placed first during the race. “Road closures will provide a safe and scenic route for cyclists to enjoy, through a dynamic and historic city centre, without impeding access for those using the city on the day”, confirmed Nthatisi Modingoane, Deputy Director of Communication for the City of Johannesburg.

Entries for the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge are open now from www.cyclechallenge.co.za. The site also contains information for cyclist on safety and security on roads and trails.

‘Every possible effort has been put into making the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge Everyone’s Race and; from ensuring the safety and enjoyment of those on the road to the participation of all supporters and the hundreds of thousands of people lining the route,’ concludes Naidoo.
