Glory and gold for Cycle Challenge winners

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge attracts the cream of the cycling crop, eager to prove themselves in Joburg’s biggest cycling event.

This year there is additional motivation for these top athletes to give it their all as prizes are valued at R355 900. In addition to the R275 000 in cash, the SA Gold Coin Exchange has sponsored gold coins to the value of R80 900.

The winners in the men’s and women’s races will each receive a Picowso Scoin valued at R19 000, 2nd place finishers in both events will take home a Mandela ½ ounce coin worth R16 000 and a Platinum Mandela 1/10th ounce coin worth R5 450 will go to the third man and woman to cross the line.

Cash prizes are awarded to the top 15 finishers in the men’s race and top 10 in the women’s event as well as the winners of two hotspots, King and Queen of the mountains and the winners of numerous age-group categories.

For the first time, the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge will also be presenting winners’ jerseys. “We introduced the winners’ jerseys to give added prestige to the event and to honour those athletes who are at the top of their game,” said race organiser Tanya Harford. “It offers them instant recognition in next year’s event so their competitors will be able to identify that they are the cyclists to beat!”

The winner of the men’s and women’s races will receive yellow jerseys, polka dot jerseys will go to the King and Queen of the mountains, the sprinters will be awarded green jerseys and best young riders – under 23 years – will be given white jerseys.

“It’s important to acknowledge the incredible achievements of the winning cyclists in an event of this stature and we are very happy to be able to add value to their race, and their careers with prizes like these,” said Harford.
